In a recent interview on the YouTube channel Second Innings with Manjot Kalra, Indian opening batter Abhishek Sharma reflected on the pivotal role former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh played in his career.
He recounted a significant incident during a Ranji Trophy match for Punjab, where he found himself in a contentious situation after sledging an opposition batter as part of Punjab’s strategic plan to target a specific player.
Nevertheless, the tables turned swiftly for the young opening batter in the subsequent innings, where he found himself at the receiving end. However, his senior and now mentor, Yuvraj Singh, keenly observed his discomfort and proactively stepped in to resolve the situation.
“Yuvi paji was at the other end, he saw that something was bothering me. He asked me about it, and I told him that this guy was abusing me. Yuvi paji just gave him a look and the player instantly apologised, “Abhishek said.
Abhishek also disclosed that Yuvraj has been his idol since their first meeting when Abhishek debuted in the Ranji Trophy at the age of just 16. During that period, Yuvraj was aiming for a comeback and had an outstanding domestic season, amassing over 800 runs.
“He has always been my idol. In fact, I was inspired to take up the sport after the T20 World Cup win in 2007. I thought that I wanted to bat, bowl, and field like him. He has had a lot of influence on me. I just kept looking at him in the dressing room,” he shared.
Abhishek remains steadfast in seeking counsel from Yuvraj Singh and his father, Yograj Singh, who have served as his mentors throughout his journey to his recent debut for India.
“Even now whenever there is some confusion or doubt in my mind, I talk to Yuvraj Singh. I feel like I will get the answers from him. He keeps in touch, even Yograj sir. I practice with Yograj sir and he keeps all the updates. I really enjoy practising with Yograj sir,” he added.
Making his debut against Zimbabwe in the recent five-match T20I series in Harare, the young talent faced an initial setback by getting dismissed for a duck. However, he quickly bounced back, showcasing his potential with a remarkable century that underlined his credentials as a promising future opener for India in T20 cricket.
