KL Rahul is set to return to the 50-over format in 2024 as India gears up to face Sri Lanka in a 3-match ODI series next month. Despite not featuring prominently in India’s T20I plans recently, the Karnataka batsman remains a pivotal figure in their ODI setup. Ahead of the series against Sri Lanka, Rahul has been diligently preparing in the nets alongside stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Recently, Rahul shared a glimpse of his practice session where he showcased his form with an impressive display. In a brief 14-second video, he demonstrated his prowess by confidently handling a bouncer and effortlessly dispatching the bowler straight down the ground with a classical shot. His preparation highlights his readiness to make an impact upon his return to the ODI squad.
The Sri Lanka tour will bring KL Rahul and Gautam Gambhir back together once more. Their association dates back to their time with the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where Gambhir served as mentor until last year. This year, Gambhir made a return to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) coaching staff after parting ways with the Lucknow-based franchise earlier in the season. Their reunion on the international stage underscores their continued professional bond beyond the IPL.
Rahul need to hit the reset button
While KL Rahul has been included in the ODI squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, it appears he may play a supporting role behind Rishabh Pant. Pant, who is set to return to the 50-over format following his recovery from injuries sustained in a serious car accident in 2022, will likely be gradually integrated back into the team across formats.
Speaking to the media in Mumbai on Monday, Ajit Agarkar emphasized the selectors’ intention to manage Pant’s workload carefully while advising Rahul to approach his game with a refreshed perspective.
âRishabh has been out for a long time. So we want to bring him back without burdening him. For someone who has come back after a long time, you need to bring them back in the scheme of things gradually. KL, one of the feedbacks he has got is âyouâve got to hit the reset buttonâ,â Agarkar had said.
