India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has acknowledged MS Dhoni’s significant role in his development as a cricketer. When Bumrah debuted in One Day Internationals (ODIs) in Sydney against Australia in 2016, MS Dhoni was at the helm as India’s captain. Shortly after, Bumrah also made his debut in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
In addition to Dhoni’s influence, Bumrah has also praised the distinct attributes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He believes that the combined contributions of these cricketing legends have greatly advanced Indian cricket.
Jasprit Bumrah credits MS Dhoni for significantly influencing his growth as a cricketer.
In an interview with The Indian Express, Jasprit Bumrah shared his thoughts on the qualities of renowned Indian cricketers. Reflecting on MS Dhoni, Bumrah highlighted that Dhoni’s reassurance and support played a crucial role in helping him perform at his best, even as a newcomer to the team.
“When I made the debut, MS (Dhoni) gave me lots of security, I felt secure, he believed in instincts,” Bumrah said.
MS Dhoni’s final appearance in international cricket was during the ODI World Cup 2019 semi-final against New Zealand. He formally declared his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020. However, Dhoni continues to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is expected to be active in the upcoming season, as he has not retired from the IPL.
Jasprit Bumrah on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
Bumrah also discussed the attributes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both of whom have captained India for significant periods. Rohit Sharma, who currently serves as India’s captain in Tests and ODIs, is anticipated to lead the team in most ICC tournaments in the coming years.
The 30-year-old fast bowler described Kohli as being highly passionate and energetic, while he praised Rohit for his deep understanding of players and his supportive nature. According to Bumrah, these cricketing icons have each played a pivotal role in advancing Indian cricket.
“Virat (Kohli) is energy-driven, passionate, he pushed us in fitness – Rohit (Sharma) had lots of empathy, understands players emotions, what players are going through – everyone has helped Indian cricket go forward,” Bumrah stated.
Following India’s victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign last month, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have both retired from T20 Internationals. However, they will be participating in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, which begins on July 2.
Jasprit Bumrah has been given a break for the Sri Lanka tour to manage his workload. The fast bowler was instrumental in India’s historic T20 World Cup win. He is expected to return to the Indian squad for the home Test series against Bangladesh.
