Scott Styris, the former New Zealand allrounder, recently shared his thoughts on the Indian pace attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka. Styris pointed out that Bumrah’s absence could potentially weaken India’s pace bowling strength and suggested that the team might require additional support in this area.
The Indian cricket team is set to face Sri Lanka in a series comprising three T20Is and three ODIs, starting July 27. The selectors have included the usual players in the T20I squad following their rest from the Zimbabwe tour. However, Jasprit Bumrah has not been selected for either white-ball format in this series.
Gautam Gambhir, the newly appointed head coach of Team India, explained that Bumrah’s absence is part of a strategy to keep him fresh for more crucial fixtures. Gambhir, who is taking on his first major role as the Indian cricket team’s head coach, emphasized the importance of managing Bumrah’s workload carefully.
Scott Styris noted that with Jasprit Bumrah unavailable, the Indian pace attack will lean on Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Khaleel Ahmed. He supported the decision to rest Bumrah, highlighting that it is a strategic move to ensure he remains fit for upcoming challenges.
“These fast bowling stocks are the one area where India probably needs a little bit more help, which is why I like the selection of these youngsters. Anytime Bumrah is not here, your team is going to be weaker. He’s as good as anyone who’s ever played the game, especially the white ball. So the decision to give him a rest, you totally understand. You’ve got to make sure that he’s fresh and ready for some of the other challenges that India have in front of them,” Styris told News18 CricketNext.
Jasprit Bumrah last featured for the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa, where he was instrumental in their campaign. He was honored as the Player of the Tournament for his outstanding performances throughout the competition. The right-arm pacer claimed 15 wickets across eight matches, boasting a remarkable average of 8.26 and an impressive economy rate of 4.17.
Scott Styris also endorsed the decision to leave Hardik Pandya out of the leadership group for the T20I squad. The former cricketer turned commentator suggested that Hardik should focus on making a strong impact with the ball rather than taking on a captaincy role. He emphasized that this situation presents a valuable chance for other players to rise to the occasion during the series in Sri Lanka.
“Siraj, he leads RCB, Khaleel leads his bowling attack. And that’s what you’re looking for the next wave. And you want more out of Hardik Pandya. That’s why I like the decision not to make him captain because I really want him to see him stand up with a dominant role with the ball more than anything. Is it an opportunity for Shivam Dube as a fourth seamer? Perhaps, maybe.”
“But if I was in the opposition, I’d be looking to attack Shivam Dube as well. There’s a really good opportunity for a lot of players in this Indian team. And I think it starts with the bowling,” Styris added.
The opening T20I between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled to take place at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele. The game will commence at 7 PM (IST) on Saturday, July 27.
