Yashasvi Jaiswal is gearing up for action in the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka after being sidelined for the entire T20 World Cup. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired, the left-hander now has a chance to shine.
Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s interim head coach, praised the young Indian players including Jaiswal and discussed the significance of the upcoming series against India for his team.
Sri Lanka had a tough T20 World Cup campaign, facing losses in crucial matches and exiting in the league stage. Wanindu Hasaranga stepped down as T20I captain, with Charith Asalanka taking over leadership duties for the series against India.
Meanwhile, in an interview with the Times of India, Sanath Jayasuriya highlighted Yashasvi Jaiswal’s batting skills. Having waited for an opportunity since the World Cup, Jaiswal is now poised for an extended stint under Gautam Gambhir in India’s revamped T20I setup.
“Jaiswal is another great talent from India. He has the passion and the want to do well, and to do that, he has been working very hard. He has made sacrifices and is a dedicated kid, that’s why he is performing. I have heard about his work ethic, and that’s quite impressive. Recently, we had a session with Zubin (Bharucha), the director of high performance at RR, and he told us how hard Jaiswal trains,” stated Jayasuriya, in an exclusive interview with TOI.
Jaiswal has already established himself as one of India’s top batsmen, boasting centuries across multiple formats and aiming to make every innings count from the outset. His consistency extends to the IPL, where despite a slow start in 2024, he managed to amass 435 runs at an average of 31.07.
In Tests, he swiftly crossed the 1000-run mark in fewer than 20 innings, showcasing his ability with a century and a double century to his name. His T20I debut in 2023 was equally impressive, racking up 430 runs that year including a century. In 2024, he’s continued his stellar form with 213 runs from five matches, boasting a strike rate of 170.
Despite being initially slated as a backup opener in the T20 World Cup, Jaiswal’s impressive track record, including 643 runs in the format so far, suggests he’s primed to achieve the milestone of 1000 runs in T20Is if he maintains his form this season.
Yashasvi Jaiswal nears a significant record.
Heading into the first T20I against Sri Lanka, Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the verge of a significant milestone. He is just 47 runs away from reaching 1000 runs in 2024 across all formats. So far this year, Jaiswal has amassed 953 runs in 16 innings, including 740 runs in six Tests and 213 runs in five T20Is.
Earlier in the year, the left-hander dominated the Test series against England, accumulating 712 runs at an impressive average of 89 and a strike rate of 80. His performance has placed him ahead of notable names like Rohit Sharma and Babar Azam in the list of leading run-getters.
