Excitement is building in English cricket as the England team prepares for a significant overhaul in their limited-overs approach, particularly within the coaching ranks. According to The Telegraph, Jos Buttler is poised to continue as captain for both the ODI and T20I formats.
Under Buttler’s leadership, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is now on the lookout for a transformative new coach with an impressive international cricket background and a deep understanding of white-ball cricket, as the tenure of head coach Matthew Mott comes to an end.
The pressure is on, and one key factor in selecting the next coach could be experience in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where reputations are built or shattered.
So, who’s in the running to succeed Matthew Mott? The Telegraph reports that leading candidates include Sri Lankan cricketing icon Kumar Sangakkara, currently the head coach of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL.
Sangakkara, who has previously managed Jos Buttler in the IPL, could be a strong contender for the role of England’s white-ball head coach, thanks to his established rapport with Buttler and his extensive experience.
Another name generating significant interest is Mike Hussey, the former Australian star who was instrumental in England’s 2022 T20 World Cup victory. Now coaching Welsh Fire in The Hundred 2024, Hussey has previously worked with England as a consultant, making him a prominent figure in the conversation.
Additionally, South African-born English cricketer Jonathan Trott is also being considered. Having recently led Afghanistan to a historic semi-final at the 2024 T20 World Cup, Trott’s leadership could offer a much-needed boost for England, especially after a challenging 15 months.
Andrew Flintoff is no longer in the running for England’s white-ball coach.

Despite his current involvement with the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred 2024 and his consultancy work with England, insiders indicate that Flintoff’s chances of landing the top job are slim.
As England gears up for their limited-overs series against Australia and with major tournaments like the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup on the distant horizon, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is taking a cautious approach in selecting the new white-ball coach.
