According to sources close to the Pakistan Cricket Board, Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is preparing to delegate significant cricketing responsibilities to former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis.
Reports suggest that Waqar will oversee both international and domestic cricket affairs, collaborating closely with Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie. This move signals a strategic shift as Naqvi intends to focus primarily on administrative matters moving forward.
“Waqar Younis is a top candidate to be handed over complete responsibility of looking after men’s cricket, including liaising with the two foreign head coaches, national selectors and domestic cricket departments.”
The insider further disclosed that Mohsin Naqvi aims to decentralize power by appointing a dedicated director of cricket to oversee all cricketing schedules and operations. This strategic decision underscores Naqvi’s vision to streamline management responsibilities within the Pakistan Cricket Board.
“Naqvi doesn’t want to centralise all powers as he wants to decentralise things, especially where cricket issues are concerned. In future, even international cricket schedules and issues would be looked over by the director of cricket. Being the federal interior minister, Naqvi believes that it is only fair that all cricket matters are handled by specialists and not only people in administration.”
Tanvir Ahmed criticizes Waqar Younis amidst Director of Cricket appointment reports.
Amidst reports of Waqar Younis being considered for the Director of Cricket Affairs role, former Pakistan cricketer Tanvir Ahmed took to Twitter to emphasize Waqar’s previous stint with the team. He pointedly remarked on what he viewed as a lack of accomplishments during that period.
Mashallah ek dafa phir board ki nokri waqar younis sahib ney kia teer mara ha is say pheley board main kasem say sahi mazey lage howey ha in logon kay ab Saray dost yar or chamchey waqar younis sahib ki tareefain karain gain (Mashallah once again job of the Pakistan Cricket Board has been given to Waqar Younis. What did he do in his last stint? They are all enjoying and now all of his friends and known ones will start praising him.)
While official confirmation is pending, if the reports prove accurate, it could mark a significant move for Pakistan Cricket. The team has faced mounting scrutiny due to recent poor performances, and a change in leadership might be seen as a potential turning point.
The Pakistan National Cricket Team’s next fixture is against the Bangladesh National Cricket Team in a Test series scheduled from August 21st to September 3rd.
