Captain Rohit Sharma has cautioned his teammates against complacency, emphasizing the need to shift their focus towards future challenges rather than dwelling on past successes.
Following India’s recent triumph in the T20 World Cup, ending an 11-year drought for an ICC trophy, Sharma stressed that the team’s celebration phase should give way to rigorous preparation for upcoming assignments.
He expressed satisfaction with the celebratory moments in Mumbai and Delhi but underscored the importance of promptly moving forward and gearing up for the forthcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka.
“I had a good time off from cricket. It was a great feeling to come back home after winning the World Cup … what we experienced in Delhi and Mumbai. But yeah, now we have to move on, cricket moves on,” said Rohit, as quoted by PTI.
“Whatever we have done in the past, that was good for that particular period of time, but time keeps moving forward and we also need to keep moving forward,” he added.
We have to think about what lies ahead: Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma reflected on how Team India handled the aftermath of their heartbreaking loss to Australia in the ODI World Cup final last year, noting that despite deep disappointment, they swiftly turned their focus forward.
Highlighting the upcoming Champions Trophy, Sharma emphasized the urgency of preparing diligently for the tournament ahead. He acknowledged the team’s resilience in moving past setbacks and redirecting their energy towards future goals.
“That’s what happened after the 2023 World Cup. There was a lot of disappointment, but we had to move on and look forward to this World Cup.
“Now, that the T20 World Cup is over, we have to think about what lies ahead of us as a team. Yeah, there is plenty to look forward to, a big tournament coming up,” he added.
The upcoming ODI series marks India’s inaugural ODI engagement of the year, following a hiatus since their series against South Africa in December last year. For Rohit Sharma, this series will also mark his return to ODI action since the World Cup final in November, highlighting a significant period of anticipation and preparation for both the team and their captain.
