Rohit Sharma delivered a stellar performance for India in the second ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday (August 4) at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The Indian captain faced 44 balls, hitting five fours and four sixes to score 64 runs. Despite being the top scorer for India for the second consecutive match, Rohit was unable to secure a win for the team against the hosts.
In this innings, Rohit reached a significant milestone. The 37-year-old right-hander surpassed former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid’s record of 10,768 runs, making him India’s fourth-highest run scorer in ODIs. Since his ODI debut against Ireland in June 2007, Rohit has accumulated 10,831 runs in 264 matches.
Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most runs scored by an Indian in ODIs, having amassed 18,426 runs in 463 matches throughout his illustrious career. He is followed by Virat Kohli, who has accumulated 13,886 runs in 294 ODIs, and former captain Sourav Ganguly, who scored 11,221 runs in 308 ODIs for India.
Rohit Sharma’s impressive performance on Sunday also saw him surpass MS Dhoni’s total of 10,773 runs, making him the 11th highest run scorer in ODIs. Dhoni’s tally includes 10,599 runs from 347 ODIs for India and 174 runs from three matches for Asia XI in 2007.
India lose by 32 runs
India faced a surprising 32-run defeat against Sri Lanka in the second ODI held in Colombo on Sunday. Chasing a target of 240 runs, India was dismissed for 208 runs in 42.2 overs. Jeffrey Vandersay’s remarkable performance, with six wickets for 33 runs in 10 overs, played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s victory. Despite Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill putting on a solid 97-run partnership for the first wicket, Sri Lanka managed to secure a memorable win under Charith Asalanka’s leadership.
As the world No. 1 ODI team, India will aim to clinch the third and final ODI on Wednesday (August 7) to avoid the embarrassment of losing a bilateral series to Sri Lanka during Gautam Gambhir’s first tour as head coach of the Indian cricket team.
