Washington Sundar has highlighted that the upcoming third ODI against Sri Lanka offers Team India a valuable chance to test their skills in spin-friendly conditions.
With Sri Lanka leading the three-match series after a win in the second ODI, India must secure a victory in the final game to avoid a series defeat. The first ODI ended in a tie, and Indian batters have struggled against Sri Lanka’s spinners in both matches.
Apart from captain Rohit Sharma, who has scored a half-century in each game, other Indian batsmen have yet to make a significant impact. In the first match, India fell short in their chase of 231 runs, being all out for 231 despite Rohit’s rapid 33-ball fifty and a 75-run partnership with Shubman Gill.
In the second ODI, while India’s bowlers managed to restrict Sri Lanka to 240/9, Rohit’s aggressive 29-ball fifty and a 97-run stand with Gill put India in a strong position. However, the middle-order faltered again, and India was dismissed for 208, losing by 32 runs. Sri Lankan spinner Jeffrey Vandersay was instrumental in the win, claiming 6 for 33.
A big opportunity for all of us: Washington Sundar
Before the crucial match, Washington Sundar has emphasized that the upcoming game will serve as valuable preparation for the Indian team for larger tournaments.
He noted that competing against Sri Lanka’s formidable spin attack in spin-friendly conditions presents a significant opportunity for the players to challenge themselves and improve their skills.
“This is a big opportunity for all of us to win this game as we know in such spin-friendly conditions against a quality attack, it will help us for bigger tournaments,” said Washington Sundar.
Additionally, Sundar mentioned that head coach Gautam Gambhir has provided the players with substantial guidance on handling spin bowlers. He also highlighted Gambhir’s expertise as a skilled player against spin, which adds valuable insight for the team.
“A lot of inputs from Gautam Gambhir about how to counter spin in these conditions. He was an excellent player against spin. A bit of change tactically,” said Sundar.
Regarding Sundar’s performance in the series, he took 1 wicket and scored 5 runs in the first match. In the second game, the Tamil Nadu player improved his performance, claiming 3 wickets and contributing 15 runs. Sundar will aim to finish the series on a strong note with a standout performance in the third game, scheduled for Wednesday, July 7.
