Indian captain Rohit Sharma may be absent for the third and final ODI of the series against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday, August 7. Should Rohit be unavailable, vice-captain Shubman Gill is expected to step in as the team’s leader.
The Indian squad has faced significant challenges against Sri Lankan spinners in the first two matches of the series. The team struggled in the middle overs, resulting in a tied first ODI and a 32-run defeat in the second match, which has given Sri Lanka an unassailable 1-0 lead.
Aside from Rohit Sharma, the Indian batters have found it difficult to handle Sri Lankan spin. In the recent game, legspinner Jeffery Vandersay delivered a remarkable performance with a five-wicket haul, finishing with six wickets for 33 runs in 10 overs. This led to India’s 32-run loss, making the final match a must-win to level the series.
Shubman Gill has had a modest showing in the series so far, accumulating just 51 runs across two innings. He was dismissed early in the first ODI and managed 35 runs in the second. Gill will be looking to capitalize on this opportunity and finish the 50-over series on a strong note.

Sports journalist Rohit Juglan from Revsportz Hindi suggested that Shubman Gill could be appointed as the captain of the Indian team for the upcoming match. Juglan announced this update on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
“Pata nahin kyon aisa lag raha hai kal Shubhman Gill kaptani karenge baaki details ke liye (I don’t know why, but it feels like Shubhman Gill will captain tomorrow. For more details…) – Youtube – Rohit Juglan”
Rohit Sharma has been in exceptional form with the bat throughout the ODI series.
The veteran opening batter has been in exceptional form during the ODI series, having scored two half-centuries. The right-handed batsman has accumulated 122 runs at a remarkable average of 61.00 and a striking rate of 134.07, making him the leading run-scorer for India in the series.
With the visitors looking to level the series and the hosts aiming for their first series win over India in 27 years, Rohit Sharma’s potential absence could be a significant blow. The team will need to adapt their lineup, and it will be intriguing to see how Shubman Gill performs as captain in this crucial match.
