Former Bangladesh cricket captain and current Member of Parliament Shakib Al Hasan has come under fire for his lack of comment on the ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh.

Shakib Al Hasan faces criticism for not addressing Bangladesh’s political unrest while competing in the Global T20 Canada 2024.
Bangladeshi fans have expressed their frustration over Shakib Al Hasan’s silence on the ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh. Despite mounting pressure and direct questions about the severe political unrest back home, Shakib opted to evade the issue and walked away without offering a response.
The former captain, who is also a Member of Parliament with the Awami League, has faced criticism for not addressing the crisis. This discontent is compounded by the fact that the party’s former leader, Sheikh Hasina, has fled to Delhi, India, following attacks on her office and home in Dhaka by protesters.
Shakib’s inaction has been perceived as a betrayal by his supporters, particularly given his position in the National Assembly. Tensions escalated when a fan confronted him about the crisis, to which Shakib responded, “What did you do for the country?” This reply further inflamed the situation.
Mohammed Jalal Yunus, Chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) Cricket Operations Committee, has voiced his disapproval of Shakib’s conduct, noting that while he had not seen the video, such behavior was unbecoming.

However, Yunus stressed that questioning Shakib’s contributions to the country was not advisable, though the incident has undoubtedly tarnished his reputation. With the political situation in Bangladesh remaining volatile, Shakib’s response continues to fuel debate and dissatisfaction among cricket fans.
According to Cricket Pakistan, Mohammed Jalal Yunus stated, “I haven’t seen the video, so it wouldn’t be right for me to comment. However, what he did was certainly not correct. Everyone has contributions in different areas, and questioning Shakib’s contributions wasn’t appropriate.”
Bangladeshi cricketers and members of minority communities have come under attack by miscreants.
The political unrest in Bangladesh has also impacted other cricketers. Former captain Mashrafe Mortaza, who is currently a Member of Parliament for Khulna Division under the Awami League, became a target when protesters attacked his home. Mortaza’s residence was destroyed and set ablaze shortly after Sheikh Hasina departed the country. This incident underscores the rising tensions and the widespread violence affecting various leaders amid the ongoing crisis.
The country has been engulfed in violence, with reports of twenty Awami League leaders being found dead across Bangladesh. This violence follows student protests demanding job quotas for the children of freedom fighters, which has intensified the unrest.
Additionally, there have been reports of attacks on at least 97 locations, including homes and businesses belonging to minority communities. At least 10 Hindu temples have also been targeted and vandalized by miscreants.
