On August 7, Virat Kohli delivered an inspiring speech to Riyan Parag before presenting him with his maiden ODI cap.
Riyan Parag made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka on August 7 at the renowned R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Despite a commendable performance with the ball, he was unable to steer India to victory in the third ODI, as Sri Lanka secured the series 2-0.
Although the result was disappointing for the Men in Blue, August 7 was a memorable day for Parag, marking his entry into international cricket. Before the game, he was presented with his maiden ODI cap by the legendary Virat Kohli, who praised the Assam all-rounder’s potential to become a match-winner for the national team.
“Riyan, firstly congratulations for getting to play your first game for India. In today’s cricket, we all know apart from performances, people who are responsible for you guys getting selected were watching you and they’ve seen something special in you. And having spoken to GG Bhai, selectors, Rohit and everyone, they see something special in you,” said Kohli in a video shared by BCCI.
“You have that ability to be a match-winner for India. I know you have that belief, I’ve known you for a while now and we all have that belief in you. No better time to step in today, 0-1 down, to start off your international career. With an impactful presence on the field ball bat and fielding as well, I wish you all the best. Cap 256, Riyan Parag,” he added.
Kohli’s words of praise and encouragement are likely to resonate deeply with Parag, serving as a powerful source of inspiration as he aims to establish himself on the international stage.
How did Riyan Parag fare on his ODI debut?
Parag, who made his international debut in the T20I series against Zimbabwe last month, had a noteworthy performance in the third ODI against Sri Lanka. He bowled nine overs in the first innings, taking the wickets of Avishka Fernando, Charith Asalanka, and Dunith Wellalage, while giving away 54 runs.
In India’s chase of a 249-run target on spin-friendly conditions, the team collapsed, losing five wickets for just 73 runs in the first 13 overs. Parag, coming in at No. 7, made a promising start with a boundary off his first ball but was dismissed by the in-form Jeffrey Vandersay for 15 off 13 balls in the 16th over. India was eventually bowled out for 138 in 26.1 overs, with Sri Lanka securing a convincing 110-run victory.
