In the recently concluded ODI series against Sri Lanka, Virat Kohli, a renowned player of spin, scored 24, 14, and 20 runs across the three matches. Interestingly, he was dismissed by spinners in each game. Despite being known for his proficiency against spin, Kohli struggled with misreading the line and length, as highlighted by former India cricketer Aakash Chopra. He was dismissed LBW in all three matches, with reviews being taken for each of his dismissals.
In the series opener, Wanindu Hasaranga claimed his wicket, followed by Jeffrey Vandersay and Dunith Wellalage in the second and third matches, respectively. Kohli’s difficulty against spin bowlers, particularly wrist spinners, has been evident over the past few years and was a recurring issue throughout the Sri Lanka series.
“Virat Kohli lbw three times in three innings against spinners. I don’t remember the last time it happened. He was playing the wrong line and also used up reviews each time. He wasn’t quite able to impose himself in the series,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
The cricketer-turned-commentator also addressed Shreyas Iyer’s performance, noting his struggles in the series. Iyer, who made his return after being removed from the BCCI’s central contract, was unable to make an impact over the three-match series. With a chance to solidify his place for the Champions Trophy 2025, Iyer managed only 38 runs. Chopra expressed uncertainty about why skilled players of spin are currently facing difficulties.
“Shreyas Iyer is considered a good player of spin, but even he was unable to counter the spinners twice and got dismissed to pace once. If our good players of spin have such performances, not sure why is it happening,” he added.
The first match of the series ended in a draw, while the visitors lost the second and third ODIs by 32 and 110 runs, respectively. As a result, Charith Asalanka’s team made history by securing Sri Lanka’s first ODI series victory over India in 27 years.
