Indian captain Rohit Sharma has etched his name in the record books by equalling the legendary Chris Gayle’s record of 331 sixes in One Day Internationals.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma has made headlines by matching Chris Gayle’s record of 331 sixes in One-Day Internationals. Sharma reached this milestone during the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka on August 7 in Colombo.
Despite India’s heavy 110-run defeat in the match, which allowed Sri Lanka to clinch their first bilateral series victory over India since 1997, Sharma’s achievement was a notable highlight.
Rohit Sharma has now hit 331 sixes in One-Day Internationals, equaling the legendary Chris Gayle’s record. Sharma, who has been a prominent figure in ODI cricket since his debut, joins Gayle at the top of the all-time sixes list. Before his retirement in 2021, Gayle held the record for the second-most sixes in ODIs.
Sharma’s prowess in clearing the boundary has been a defining feature of his career, especially in the shorter formats of the game. In the third ODI against Sri Lanka, where he scored 35 runs off 20 balls, Sharma’s lone six was crucial in matching Gayle’s record.
Rohit Sharma becomes fourth Indian batter to score 2000 ODI runs against Sri Lanka
The record for the most sixes in ODIs is currently held by former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, who has hit 351 sixes. Rohit Sharma, now tied with Chris Gayle at 331 sixes, is poised to surpass this mark and potentially become the leading six-hitter in ODI history in upcoming matches.
Additionally, Sharma has achieved another milestone by becoming the fourth Indian batsman—joining the ranks of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni—to accumulate over 2,000 runs against Sri Lanka in One-Day Internationals.
The only player ahead of Rohit Sharma and Chris Gayle on the ODI sixes list is former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, who holds the record with 351 sixes. Sharma is now aiming to surpass Afridi’s mark and become the top six-hitter in ODI history.
In addition to this achievement, Sharma also became the fourth Indian batter—after Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni—to score over 2,000 runs against Sri Lanka in ODIs.
In the final ODI against Sri Lanka, the hosts won the toss and chose to bat first. Avishka Fernando (96), Kusal Mendis (59), and Pathum Nissanka (45) played key roles, helping Sri Lanka set a total of 248/7.
Debutant Riyan Parag was the standout bowler for India, taking 3/54. Despite a solid start from Rohit Sharma, India’s batting lineup failed to build on the early momentum, leading to their defeat and the series loss.
