India’s wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan is poised to participate in the Duleep Trophy 2024. According to Indian Express, the BCCI selection committee is keen on having him return to the red-ball format to enhance his chances for the Indian team.
The tournament is scheduled to start on September 5th, and Kishan will join Shreyas Iyer in the competition. Both players were dropped from the BCCI’s annual contract earlier this year after refusing to play domestic matches, leading to their exclusion from the Indian squad.
While Iyer later competed in the Ranji Trophy, Kishan declined to participate, facing criticism and multiple warnings from the BCCI and team management.
Kishan was a key player for the Indian team across all formats and served as the first-choice keeper. He even participated in the ICC World Cup 2023. However, his fortunes took a turn when he withdrew from the Test series against South Africa due to mental fatigue.
Despite expectations from then head coach Rahul Dravid for Kishan to return to domestic cricket to regain form, he opted to remain on break, causing dissatisfaction with the BCCI.
Consequently, Kishan was dropped from the central contracts. Although he returned to cricket in the Indian Premier League, he had a disappointing season, failing to make a significant impact.
Ishan Kishan is also slated to play in the Ranji Trophy.
Reports suggest that Ishan Kishan is set to return to domestic cricket through the Ranji Trophy. The Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) has named him in the 25-player list of pre-season probables. Kishan has reportedly agreed to represent Jharkhand for the upcoming domestic season and may even be considered for the captaincy.
Additionally, it’s been reported that Indian team selectors have discussed Kishan’s situation with him, advising that he could miss out on international opportunities if he doesn’t perform well. They emphasized the importance of making a strong comeback.
Participating in the Duleep Trophy and Ranji Trophy provides Kishan with a crucial chance to regain his form and make a compelling case for a return to the Indian team. These tournaments will be pivotal for him to showcase his skills and improve his prospects.
