Suryakumar Yadav’s prospects of leaving a significant impact in international cricket outside of T20Is are diminishing swiftly. Former Indian cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra has made a strong assertion regarding the batter’s future in ODIs and Tests.
Examining recent squad selections and team strategies, Chopra suggested that it is nearly certain Suryakumar will not be seen in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) or Test cricket in the near future, following his appointment as India’s T20I captain last month.
Aakash Chopra asserts that Suryakumar Yadav’s prospects in ODIs and Tests are virtually finished.
The cricket expert asserted that Indian selectors and team management have clearly decided against giving Suryakumar Yadav opportunities in ODIs or Tests for now, viewing him primarily as a T20 specialist due to his dynamic performances in that format.
Chopra believes this decision could thwart Suryakumar’s ambitions in ODI and Test cricket. With limited cricketing engagements ahead, he suggests that selectors have chosen to overlook the stylish right-hander for upcoming ODIs and Tests.
Highlighting the fierce competition for places in the Test squad, Chopra indicated that Suryakumar’s chances of inclusion are slim. As Team India prepares for the Bangladesh Test series, Chopra reiterated that Suryakumar’s opportunities in both 50-over and five-day formats are diminishing, with the team management favoring players who offer more versatility.
For the time being, Chopra suggests that Suryakumar’s international career is likely to remain focused on T20Is, with no immediate prospect of a return to the ODI and Test arenas, as selectors prioritize players with broader skill sets.
Indian selectors will consider SKY as a T20 specialist: Chopra
Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel: “Not in the near future (On when will Sky play in ODI or T20). I think that decision has already been taken by the selectors and team management. There is not much cricket now. And I think the selectors and team management have just decided that they won’t keep Suryakumar Yadav in the team. They are like that; we will consider SKY as a T20 specialist.
That means there is no chance in Test cricket. There is a different level of competition in tests. There are so many players who want to come in. I don’t think SKY will play in the next Test series. Check out the squad for Bangladesh Tests. Sky won’t play now. 50-over cricket and 5-day cricket won’t happen now for him.”
Chopra also highlighted Prasidh Krishna’s potential to excel as a top-tier bowler and recommended that the Indian team invest in his development. Additionally, he called for a well-defined plan for Avesh Khan, expressing concern over his management, especially since he was only a reserve bowler for the T20 World Cup 2024.
