The Trent Rockets have received a significant setback just as The Hundred 2024 heads towards its crucial stages. According to ESPNCricinfo, star all-rounder Rashid Khan has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a hamstring injury.
Rashid sustained the injury during the match between Trent Rockets and Southern Brave on August 10th. The Afghanistan captain injured himself while fielding in the last over and was visibly in pain. Subsequent evaluations revealed a torn hamstring, making him unavailable for the rest of the league.
In Rashid’s absence, Chris Green has been called up as his replacement. Rashid Khan has been a key player for the Trent Rockets this season, contributing significantly with nine wickets in five games and scoring 44 runs at an impressive strike rate of 157.15.
This injury comes as part of a troubling trend for Rashid, who has struggled with physical issues recently. He had back surgery following Afghanistan’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign and missed The Hundred 2023 due to an undisclosed injury. After a successful stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Rashid returned to competitive cricket, captained Afghanistan in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, and has been active in various global leagues.
Rashid Khan got hit for 5 sixes by Kieron Pollard
Rashid Khan recently made headlines after Kieron Pollard hit him for five consecutive sixes. In a crucial match against the Southern Brave, the Trent Rockets were in a strong position, needing to defend 49 runs from 20 balls.
Rashid was introduced into the attack specifically to counter Pollard, but the strategy backfired as the leg-spinner was hammered for five sixes off his first five deliveries. Prior to this, Rashid had conceded only 10 runs from his initial 15 balls and had dismissed Andre Fletcher.
The full extent of Rashid Khan’s injury remains unclear. Nonetheless, he will be eager to recover in time for the upcoming one-off Test against New Zealand, set to take place in Noida in September. Rashid aims to regain fitness to contribute significantly to his team and make an impact in Test cricket, following his team’s semi-final appearance in the T20 World Cup 2024.
In addition to Rashid’s injury, the Trent Rockets are also dealing with a concern regarding Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim, who has been struggling with an injury. While Wasim has not yet been ruled out of the series, his participation in the crucial upcoming match remains uncertain.
