Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting has shared his predictions for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, forecasting a 3-1 series victory for the Australian team.
As the India National Cricket Team prepares for their tour to Australia for the five-match Test series, the anticipation is already building. Although the series will commence in November, both fans and players are eagerly awaiting the clash.
Historically, India and Australia have delivered some fiercely competitive matches. Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, India has performed exceptionally well on their previous two tours of Australia, clinching back-to-back series victories. The 2020-21 series was particularly remarkable, as India overcame significant challenges to secure the win.
This upcoming series will mark the first time India and Australia have faced off in a five-match Test series, and it will also count towards the ICC World Test Championship. With a place in the final at stake, the series is expected to be highly exciting.
Ponting, in discussing the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, acknowledged that the series will be fiercely contested. However, he believes that Australia will have extra motivation to prove themselves after their previous two series losses.
Ponting also highlighted the significance of the five-match format, noting that it reduces the likelihood of drawn matches and adds to the series’ competitiveness. Speaking to the ICC, he emphasized the importance of this format in delivering a decisive outcome.
“It’s going to be a competitive series and as I said I think Australia’s got a bit of a point to prove against India in Australia on the back of what’s happened the last the last two series here.
“We are back to five Tests as well, which is the other really important thing about this series. It’s only been four Tests the last couple of times. Five tests, I think everyone’s excited by that and I don’t know if there’d be too many drawn games.”
I’m going to say 3-1 to Australia – Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting has confidently endorsed Australia’s chances of winning the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Taking into account various weather conditions and the potential for drawn matches, he has forecasted a 3-1 series victory for Pat Cummins and his team against the India National Cricket Team.
“I’m going to tip Australia to win and I’m never going to tip against Australia. There will be a draw somewhere and there will be some bad weather somewhere, so I’m going to say 3-1 to Australia,” said Ricky Ponting.
The series opener will take place at Optus Stadium in Perth, beginning on November 22. The second Test, a day-night match, will be held in Adelaide starting December 6.
Following that, the third Test is set for Gabba in Brisbane, beginning on December 14. The Boxing Day Test will be hosted at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), commencing on December 26. The final match of the series will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3.
