The connection between the West Indies and the IPL stretches back to 2008, with numerous prominent T20 players making their mark in the league. Notable figures such as Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, and Dwayne Bravo have been some of the most impactful performers over the years.
Andre Russell and Sunil Narine have been crucial to the Kolkata Knight Riders’ success, delivering standout performances season after season. More recently, Nicholas Pooran has emerged as a consistent presence in the IPL, showcasing his talent over the past few seasons.
In a recent discussion between the IPL team owners and the BCCI, several key issues were addressed and debated. The BCCI has responded by stating that they will provide their feedback and finalize the number of retentions by the end of August 2025. In the meantime, this article explores five West Indies cricketers who might consider retiring from T20 cricket if they are not selected in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
West Indies Legends Set To Retire From T20s If Not Picked In IPL 2025
Jason Holder
Holder last played in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2023. He has never been given a longer run in the IPL by any of the franchises he has played for. He was even ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2024 due to injury concerns.
His getting ruled out of the T20 World Cup has diminished his chances of getting rebought by any of the franchises in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Alzarri Joseph
Joseph had an expensive stint in IPL 2024 with RCB. He picked up just one wicket in the three matches that he played and fell out of favor from the selection. He did play in the T20 World Cup 2024 but could not make impactful performances.
Shai Hope
Hope is a technically correct batsman. He is made for Test and ODI cricket. T20 cricket is not his game and that was proved in the few matches that he played for Delhi Capitals last season. He scored just 183 runs in nine matches at an average of just 22.
He is a much better batsman in the other two formats and can consider retiring from T20 cricket if he is not picked in the mega auction next year.
Rovman Powell
The West Indies T20I skipper played for the Rajasthan Royals last year but could not make the most of it. He had a chance to win a few games for the side potentially with the bat but he could not.
He could not win the T20 World Cup as captain of West Indies as well in the ICC event earlier this year. If he is indeed not selected for the IPL next year, he might well consider retiring from the format.
Akeal Hosein
Strangely Hosein was benched throughout the IPL 2024 after they roped him in in the mini auction last year.
The talented spinner from West Indies did not find a spot in the XI despite being one of the best spinners in the format. He plays across all franchise cricket leagues but is unlikely to be bought in the next IPL auction too.
