In February of this year, BCCI secretary made a bold promise to Indian cricket fans, vowing that the team would raise the national flag in Barbados after clinching the T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. His prediction proved accurate as India secured the title for the first time since 2007, with Rohit Sharma proudly planting the Indian flag on the Kensington Oval pitch.
Now that the T20 World Cup mission is complete, what’s next for the Indian teams?
Shah is now urging both the Indian men’s and women’s teams to maintain their success and has predicted that they will secure the next three ICC titles. The Indian women’s team will compete in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the UAE, aiming to win their first title after being runners-up in 2020. Meanwhile, the Indian men’s team will target victory in the Champions Trophy and hopes to reach the ICC World Test Championship final for the third consecutive time next year.
“What next? I would like to remind everyone what I said before the T20 World Cup, that Rohit Sharma will plant the Indian flag at Barbados and he did,” Shah said during an event in Mumbai on Wendesday.
“When you have 1.4 billion people’s blessings, I can say we will do the same in the Champions Trophy, World Test Championship final and women’s T20 World Cup,” he added.
Shah received the award for ‘excellence in sports administration’ at a recent cricket awards event.
“I dedicate the award to all our women players, our 2023 ODI runners-up team and the 2024 T20 World Cup team,” Shah said.
Rohit, who attended the event as well, was honored with the men’s international cricketer of the year award. He is set to return to the field next month for a two-match Test series against Bangladesh.
