On Tuesday, the West Indies secured an eight-wicket win over South Africa in a rain-affected match, completing a 3-0 T20 International series sweep. Shai Hope led the charge with an unbeaten 42 from 24 balls, while Nicholas Pooran added 35 off just 13 deliveries, setting the stage for the hosts’ triumph at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba.
After South Africa posted 108-4 in 13 overs, the West Indies needed 116 to win according to the Duckworth-Lewis method.
The West Indies achieved this target comfortably, reaching 116-2 with 22 balls to spare.
Of their total, an impressive 82 runs were scored through boundaries, including nine sixes and seven fours.
Romario Shepherd was named Man of the Match for the West Indies, delivering a solid bowling performance with figures of 2-14 from two overs, which significantly halted South Africa’s progress.
The win was particularly gratifying for the West Indies team, who had been knocked out of the T20 World Cup by the South Africans in June.
“To come and clean sweep the team which knocked us out of the World Cup was great,” Shepherd said.
West Indies skipper Roston Chase added: “We wanted to win the series 3-0. In a shortened game we want guys to go and play their natural game. The guys came out and played brilliantly.”
South Africa captain Aiden Markram, who contributed 20 runs off 12 balls to the Proteas’ total, acknowledged that there is still room for improvement in his team’s performance.
“Tough one today,” Markram said. “Probably got the tougher of the conditions. That being said, we can improve as a team. It’s going to take a little bit of time; there’s a bit we can take from it but it’s never great to lose.”
