Mohammed Shami Likely to miss the third Test against Australia at Brisbane.
The uncertainty surrounding Mohammed Shami involvement in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy continues to garner significant attention. While there remains a possibility of him joining the team later in the series, it is confirmed that he will miss the third Test at the Gabba, scheduled to begin on Saturday, December 14, according to a report by The Indian Express.
Mohammed Shami participated in the SMAT 2024 quarterfinal match between Baroda and Bengal on Wednesday, effectively ruling out any chance of him flying to Australia before the Gabba Test.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma recently confirmed that the door remains open for Shami’s return but revealed that the pacer experienced a swollen knee during the SMAT game. Despite this setback, Shami has showcased impressive form, claiming 11 wickets in nine matches with an economy rate of 7.86 and a strike rate of just 19. His performances, including bowling over 40 overs in a Ranji game, underline his fitness, hunger, and passion to don the India jersey again.
Team India is taking a cautious approach with Mohammed Shami’s fitness.
Mohammed Shami last represented India in the 2023 World Cup, where he was the team’s most successful bowler. In February 2024, he underwent surgery to repair his Achilles tendon and has since been working diligently at the NCA to regain full fitness for international cricket.
Initially, there were hopes that Shami would be ready for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but he couldn’t recover in time. Given his history of injuries, the Indian management is adopting a cautious approach. Indian players and support staff have repeatedly emphasized that they do not want to rush Shami’s comeback, fearing it could lead to further complications.
