Team India star batter Virat Kohli ended a tough 2024 as Virat Kohli becomes the worst-ever batsman in 2024 for India for India scoring only five runs in the second innings of the fourth Test against Australia in Melbourne, while also setting an unwanted record for the lowest average among top-6 Indian batters in a calendar year.
Kohli was dismissed for just five runs off 29 balls in the first session of Day 5 in the Boxing Day Test on Monday, December 30. His wicket fell at a pivotal moment, following the dismissals of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul by Pat Cummins, leaving India in deep trouble at 33-3 while chasing a daunting target of 340 runs.

The 36-year-old batter played an extravagant cover drive to Mitchell Starc’s full delivery, only to edge it through to Usman Khawaja, who took a safe catch at first slip. Kohli’s dismissal shifted the momentum in Australia’s favor, leaving India with the daunting task of either chasing down 307 runs for victory or surviving two more sessions to force a draw.
Kohli set the unfortunate record for the lowest batting average in a calendar year among Indian top-six batters in international cricket, finishing 2024 with an average of just 21.83. He surpassed Sanjay Manjrekar, whose average of 23.42 in 1992 had previously been the lowest, to claim this dubious distinction.
