Ravi Ashwin believes Suryakumar Yadav should reconsider his batting approach, especially after his struggles in the England T20I series, where he kept getting out to nearly identical deliveries across all five matches.
Former spinner Ravi Ashwin has suggested that India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, may need to adjust his batting approach following a tough run of form in the England T20I series. While Yadav led India admirably as captain, his batting performances were disappointing—managing just 28 runs across five matches, with an average of 5.60. What stood out most about his struggles was that he appeared to be dismissed by the same type of delivery repeatedly, much like his teammate Sanju Samson.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravi Ashwin emphasized that Suryakumar’s main issue was his batting, not his leadership. He noted that both Yadav and Samson had fallen to similar deliveries consistently. Ashwin believes Suryakumar should give his batting some space to breathe and come up with better strategies to handle those recurring deliveries.
“The problem though, however, is Suryakumar’s batting. Of course, his captaincy has been really good in this series. His captaincy has been on point, too. But he can allow his batting some much-needed breathing space. Sanju Samson and SKY getting out to the same ball, same field, same shot, same mistake, same dismissal,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
“I can understand it happening in 1-2 games, but this is not uncanny anymore. Players should play with freedom, but our batters need to have better answers to the same question,” he said.

Ravi Ashwin Advices Suryakumar Yadav: Time to change his approach
Ashwin acknowledged that Suryakumar is a highly experienced player and has been at the forefront of India’s changing T20I leadership. However, the former spinner stressed that it was now crucial for the Indian captain to focus on refining his batting.
“Suryakumar Yadav is a very experienced guy. One could say he was at the forefront of a change of guard of sorts. But it is time he changed his approach to his batting,” said Ashwin.
With India now shifting focus to the England ODIs and the upcoming Champions Trophy, Suryakumar will have some time to step back and reassess his game. According to the latest reports, he may even make himself available for the Ranji Trophy matches with Mumbai to work on his form.
