The ninth installment of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will showcase a total of twenty teams, including co-hosts West Indies and USA. This expansive tournament is scheduled to kick off on June 2, with the USA facing off against Canada in the opening match at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. The pinnacle of the 2024 T20 World Cup is slated for June 29, with the final set to take place in Bridgetown, Barbados.
In addition to the host nations, USA and West Indies, ten other teams secured direct entry into the competition. The top eight teams from the 2022 T20 World Cup – England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Australia, and the Netherlands – automatically advanced to the main event. Bangladesh and Afghanistan also secured automatic qualification based on their T20I team rankings.
Meanwhile, the remaining teams had to earn their spots through regional qualifiers. Canada emerged victorious in the Americas qualifier, while Ireland and Scotland secured berths through the European campaign. In Africa, Namibia and Uganda claimed qualification spots, while Nepal and Oman progressed from the Asia qualifiers. Papua New Guinea secured their place in the tournament by winning the East Asia-Pacific qualifier.
ICC T20 WORLD CUP 2024 FORMAT:
The participating teams have been divided into four groups, each consisting of five teams. In the league stage, teams within each group will compete against each other once. Based on the points accumulated, the top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage. These 16 teams will be split into two groups, with the top two from each group progressing to the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-final matches will then face off in the final showdown.
TIED AND WASHED-OUT MATCHES:
In the event of a tied match, the outcome will be determined by a Super Over. If the Super Over also ends in a tie, another Super Over will be played to determine the winner. In case of rain or adverse weather conditions during the group stage or Super Eight matches, a minimum of five overs per innings will be required to establish a result. For knockout matches, a minimum of ten overs per innings is necessary.
The first semi-final and the final matches have an additional 190 minutes of extra time allocated and a reserve day to accommodate any potential washout scenarios. However, the second semi-final will not have a reserve day due to logistical constraints.
England currently holds the title of Men’s T20 World Cup champions. They will commence their campaign with a match against Scotland on June 4th.
