KKR CEO Venky Mysore has proposed a solution ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, aiming to balance team stability and player earnings. With most teams expected to release a significant portion of their squad, this auction represents a chance for rebuilding for some, while established teams like KKR may face challenges.
Previous mega auctions limited retention to 3-5 players, with the upcoming rules still uncertain. Mysore’s suggestion involves granting teams up to eight Right to Match (RTM) cards, offering a balance between continuity and the excitement of a fresh auction.
Venky Mysore has put forward a proposal in anticipation of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
In a video on his YouTube channel, veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle shared Mysore’s proposal. Over time, there’s been a belief that many players prefer entering the auction rather than being retained by franchises, as it could lead to larger contracts. Mysore’s suggestion appears to address this concern for both players and franchises. Under this proposal, players would enter the auction while franchises retain the option to buy them back using the RTM card. For those unfamiliar, the RTM card permits a team to acquire a player who wasn’t retained but played for them previously. The franchise must match the highest bid for the player to secure his services.
“Venky Mysore of KKR has come up with a workable suggestion which is that you should be allowed to retain players if they have a fair market value. So no retentions but eight Right to Match cards,” said Bhogle.
In the 2022 mega auction, the inclusion of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants led to a prohibition on teams utilizing the RTM cards. Yet, during the mega auctions of 2014 and 2018, teams were permitted to employ these cards.
