In his column, Justin Langer, the head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants, shared that he had visited Dharavi, Mumbai’s largest slum. The former Australian cricketer recounted his experience, reflecting on the stark contrast between his current luxurious lifestyle and the conditions in Dharavi, and expressed his gratitude.
Langer spoke about his interaction with Rajesh Chandrashekhar, one of the team’s massage therapists, whom he refers to as RC. Early on, after joining the team, Langer asked RC about his various roles. Besides being a masseuse, RC was also a hairdresser and offered to give Langer a haircut.
During the haircut, RC shared his family history, and it was decided that he and his brother would visit their home in Dharavi together.
After the conclusion of their final match of the season against the Mumbai Indians, Langer fulfilled his promise and visited the slum where he was warmly welcomed by the Chandrashekhar family.
During his visit, Langer recounted his meaningful interactions with the Chandrashekhar family. They enjoyed a meal together, and afterward, they participated in a local tradition by visiting a nearby church.
Reflecting on his experience in the slums, Langer emerged with a significant takeaway as the Indian Premier League season drew to a close.
“After a life of living what I would now define as extreme luxury, I was humbled like never before seeing how other human beings live their day-to-day lives. What struck me about our visit to RC’s house was that while they seemed to have nothing, they also had everything they really needed to be happy,” Langer concluded.
Langer undoubtedly plans to integrate the insights gained from this experience into the strategies for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League with the Lucknow Super Giants, as the franchise persists in its quest for the coveted championship title.
