Nepal’s cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane faces the disappointing prospect of missing out on the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, slated to take place in the West Indies and the United States. Despite efforts from the Cricket Association of Nepal, Lamichhane’s visa application for the United States has been denied for the second time.
Lamichhane, known for his leg-spin prowess, last represented Nepal in the 2023 T20 World Cup Asia Finals, where he showcased his skills against formidable opponents like India and Pakistan. His stint with various T20 franchises, notably the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, has further honed his abilities on the international stage.
Although Lamichhane recently received exoneration from a rape case by the Patan High Court, leading to the lifting of his ban by the Cricket Association of Nepal, his visa application for the T20 World Cup faced setbacks. Despite legal clearance, his attempt to obtain a visa for the tournament was rebuffed, despite advocacy from Nepali authorities, leaving his participation uncertain.

Despite concerted efforts from the Nepalese government and other entities, the US Embassy rejected Sandeep Lamichhane’s travel request for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
“Despite taking necessary initiatives, along with the diplomatic note, from the government of Nepal, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Youth and Sports, National Sports Council, CAN, and International Cricket Council, for cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane’s visit to participate in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies, the US Embassy has expressed its inability to give travel permission to national player Lamichhane to play in the World Cup,” CAN said in a statement as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Visa Records Are Confidential Under US Law – Spokesperson Of The US Embassy
While a representative from the US Embassy refrained from discussing specific visa applications, citing legal confidentiality, they clarified that members of national cricket teams, eligible for the suitable visa category, can secure timely travel arrangements to participate in the World Cup.
“The US Embassy in Kathmandu and other US consular posts around the world have made a concerted effort to ensure that members of national cricket teams who qualify for the appropriate visa class are able to travel in time to compete in the World Cup. We cannot comment on individual visa cases as visa records are confidential under US law,” a spokesperson of the US Embassy in Kathmandu said.
In the T20 World Cup 2024, Nepal finds itself grouped with Bangladesh, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands in Group D. Their tournament journey begins on June 4 at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas, where they will face the Netherlands.
