The upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 presents India with another chance to break their drought for a World Cup victory. Despite their dominance in bilateral series over the past decade, India’s performance in global tournaments hasn’t matched their prowess. While they have performed strongly in the initial stages of competitions, they have faltered in crucial knockout matches, as evidenced by their loss in the final of the ODI World Cup last year against Australia, prolonging their quest for an ICC trophy.
Since claiming the World Cup title in 2011 and winning an ICC trophy in 2013, India hasn’t tasted victory in any format, including the T20 World Cup since their triumph in 2007. As they prepare for the 2024 T20 World Cup, former captain Sourav Ganguly has imparted vital advice to the team.
During a recent gathering, the esteemed former skipper commended India’s deep squad and labeled them a ‘fantastic side’. He emphasized the importance of playing with freedom, indicating that it is crucial for India to excel in the upcoming competition.
“We hope that India will play well. All the players are good. There are so many players in our country that it becomes difficult to select the playing XI. We are spoiled for choices. They have a fantastic side,” Ganguly told ANI.
“This is Rahul Dravid’s job because he is the coach. We will just watch and cheer for India. I would just like to say that we have to play freely in the T20 format,” he added when asked to offer guidance to the Rohit Sharma-led side.
India sets its sights on clinching their second T20 World Cup title in 2024.
The T20 World Cup kicks off on Sunday (June 2) with a match between co-hosts USA and Canada in Dallas. Meanwhile, India will commence their campaign on June 5. Placed in Group A alongside Ireland, Pakistan, USA, and Canada, the Men in Blue will face Ireland in their tournament opener.
India aims to secure their second T20 World Cup title, aspiring to become the first Asian team to achieve this feat. Their previous campaign ended abruptly in the semifinals with a devastating 10-wicket defeat against eventual champions England. Eager for redemption, India is determined to make a strong statement in this year’s tournament.
