Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh commended Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi for his match-winning performance against Ireland. Afridi’s impactful bowling spell played a crucial role in Pakistan’s narrow three-wicket victory in a tense T20 World Cup encounter held at Lauderhill, Florida on Sunday.
Pakistan’s decision to bowl first proved effective as they restricted Ireland to a modest 106/9. Afridi particularly stood out, capturing three wickets while conceding just 22 runs in his four overs, effectively stifling the Irish batting lineup.
During his analysis on Star Sports, Harbhajan Singh expressed admiration for Afridi’s contribution to Pakistan’s success in the match.
“Shaheen Afridi bowled well. He came in proper form slightly late in this tournament. Their tournament is over but this match would give him confidence for sure. A big player feels bad when he doesn’t perform as per expectations,” he said.
Afridi started his bowling spell impressively by dismissing Andy Balbirnie with a delivery that crashed into the stumps in the very first over of the match. He continued his dominance by taking the wicket of Lorcan Tucker, caught behind the stumps, and then trapping Harry Tector lbw in his second over. Afridi’s early strikes were instrumental in dismantling Ireland’s top batting order.
“There was a lot of help from the pitch but despite that, you have to pitch the ball at the right spot, from where the ball goes and hits the stumps or the pads. He generally bowls those deliveries. He bowled a very good ball (to Andy Balbirnie), which was far from the bat and it got a chance to swing,” he explained.
Afridi’s ability to swing the ball in both directions kept the Irish batsmen under pressure, ultimately causing their downfall. Harbhajan described Afridi’s skill in swinging the ball as a dual threat, confusing batsmen with his ability to move the ball both ways before delivering a lethal yorker.
“After that, he took the ball away. He was like a sword that cuts from both sides – the first ball came in and the second ball went away.”
The former Indian spinner stressed that Afridi’s performance would enhance his confidence, which is essential for any top-tier player.“However, he will feel better today as he did a job where both he and his team will feel nice. As he said, their focus will be on the future. They will reflect on whatever has happened, rectify their mistakes and move forward,” Harbhajan stated.
