According to Geo News, Pakistan head coach Gary Kirsten recently had a frank discussion with the players following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
Pakistan, considered strong contenders for the title, faltered and exited the tournament in the league stage. Their campaign suffered an early setback with a surprising loss to USA in their opening match. Subsequent defeats to India further dimmed their prospects, despite a brief revival when USA’s match against Ireland was washed out. Ultimately, Pakistan’s tournament concluded with an uninspiring victory over Ireland on Sunday, June 17.
No unity in Pakistan team says Gary Kirsten
One day after Pakistan’s exit from the T20 World Cup, Gary Kirsten candidly addressed the players, highlighting a startling lack of unity within the team. The seasoned coach, known for his stints with various international teams, expressed dismay at the apparent absence of support and solidarity among the Pakistan players.
“There’s no unity in Pakistan team. They call it a team, but it isn’t a team. They aren’t supporting each other; everyone is separated, left and right. I’ve worked with many teams, but I’ve never seen such a situation,” said Gary Kirsten according to the report in Geo News.
Kirsten additionally emphasized the necessity for Pakistan players to enhance their fitness and skills significantly to compete effectively against top international teams. He cautioned the players, asserting that selection for the team would prioritize those who demonstrate a genuine commitment to improving their fitness levels.
“If we want to compete in the world, we have to improve our fitness and skills and be united. We are way behind in terms of fitness. Only the players who want to improve on their fitness will remain in the team,” said the former India head coach according to Geo News.
