A manipulated image circulating on social media falsely depicted a wedding between former Indian tennis player Sania Mirza and Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami. The photo, originally from Sania Mirza’s wedding with cricketer Shoaib Malik in April 2010, had Shoaib Malik’s face replaced with Mohammed Shami’s. This doctored image sparked false claims of a marriage between Mirza and Shami.
On June 12, a Facebook account shared the edited picture, “Sania Mirza married Mohammad Shami after divorce with Shoaib! Nikkah pictures viral, know the truth.” However, fact-checking efforts by iVerify Pakistan, a initiative of the Centre for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ) in Karachi, conclusively debunked these claims.
The misleading post gained significant traction, accruing over 5,000 likes initially, and was further disseminated through various platforms.

Mirza wed Malik in April 2010, yet her father revealed on Instagram in January 2024 that they had divorced several months earlier. Malik subsequently married actress Sana Javed. This disclosure sparked numerous rumors, including a baseless assertion about Mirza marrying Shami.
