India’s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has made history in the T20 World Cup, surpassing both Adam Gilchrist and Kumar Sangakkara for the most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in a single edition of the tournament.

Pant achieved this milestone during India’s Super 8 stage match against Afghanistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. The game took place on Thursday, 20th June, at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

In the match against Afghanistan, Pant took three crucial catches, dismissing Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Gulbadin Naib, and Naveen-ul-Haq. This brought his total catches in the tournament to 10, surpassing the previous record of 9 held jointly by Gilchrist and Sangakkara.

Pant’s exceptional performance behind the stumps has been a key factor in India’s success in the T20 World Cup 2024. His agility and sharpness as a wicketkeeper have been instrumental for the team.

This edition marks Pant’s third T20 World Cup appearance for India. He made notable contributions in the 2021 edition and had limited opportunities in 2022, playing only in the semi-final match as Dinesh Karthik was preferred.

In addition to his wicketkeeping prowess, Rishabh Pant has excelled with the bat for India in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Assigned the crucial No. 3 position, the keeper-batter has embraced the role admirably. He currently leads India’s batting charts, amassing 116 runs from four innings at an impressive average of 38.66 and a striking strike rate of 131.81.

Pant began the tournament impressively, scoring an unbeaten 36 off 26 balls against Ireland in the opener. He followed it up with a quickfire 42 off 21 deliveries against Pakistan. In the latest match against Afghanistan, he contributed a brisk cameo, scoring 20 runs. His consistent performances have been vital for India’s campaign in the tournament.

India kicked off their Super 8 campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024 with a commanding victory over Afghanistan, triumphing by a margin of 47 runs. Their performance with the bat was exceptional, posting a formidable total of 181 runs. Suryakumar Yadav starred with a crucial innings of 53 runs, well supported by Hardik Pandya (32) and Rishabh Pant.

The Indian bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings, preventing Afghanistan’s batsmen from settling. This strategy paid off as they consistently took wickets, restricting Afghanistan to 134 all out. The match was held at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Jasprit Bumrah led the bowling attack superbly, conceding only 7 runs and claiming three important wickets. Arshdeep Singh also made significant contributions with three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with two wickets, ensuring India’s comprehensive victory.
