After Australia’s loss to India in the final Super 8 game at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St. Lucia, an Indian fan took the opportunity to sled Pat Cummins as he returned to the dressing room. Cummins had scored 11 runs off 7 balls but couldn’t steer Australia to victory.
The fan, energized by India’s thrilling triumph over the ODI World Cup champions, proclaimed from the stands that the victory served as revenge for the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
Fan said: “Hey Pat! That’s for 2023, that’s revenge for 2023, remember Ahmedabad? And you going home tomorrow?” the fan sledged Cummins from the stands.
In the ODI World Cup final of 2023, India suffered a devastating loss to Australia, where Pat Cummins led the Australian team.
India delivered a commanding performance to defeat Australia decisively in their crucial match. Australia, needing a win to stay in contention for the semi-finals, faced a formidable challenge from India, who outclassed them in every department.
Despite Virat Kohli’s continued struggle with low scores, captain Rohit Sharma led by example with a scintillating innings of 92 runs off just 41 balls, setting the tone for India. Contributions from Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Hardik Pandya bolstered India’s total to 205-5 in their allotted 20 overs, with Josh Hazlewood being the standout bowler for Australia with figures of 1-14 in four overs.
In response, Australia’s Travis Head and skipper Mitchell Marsh initially threatened to chase down the target. However, Marsh’s dismissal, caught brilliantly by Axar Patel on the boundary, shifted momentum towards India. Despite Glenn Maxwell’s effort, Australia struggled to keep up with the required run rate. Travis Head’s departure after a well-made 76 off 43 balls dealt a severe blow to Australia’s hopes, leading to their eventual total of 181-7 and a 24-run defeat.
Although Australia retained a slim chance to qualify, Afghanistan’s narrow win over Bangladesh in the subsequent match eliminated them from the Super 8 stage. Rohit Sharma was rightfully named Player of the Match for his exceptional performance.
With this victory, India secured the top spot in Group 1 and now prepares to face England in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Providence Stadium, Guyana.
