The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Mohammad Wasim, former middle-order batsman and chief selector, as the new head coach of the women’s team. Wasim’s appointment comes ahead of crucial tournaments including the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup.

During his tenure as chief selector for Pakistan’s Men’s Cricket Team under Chairman Ramiz Raja, Wasim has been chosen to lead the women’s team by the PCB. According to reports from PTI, Wasim will be supported by Junaid Khan as assistant coach and Abdur Rehman as bowling coach. Both Khan and Rehman bring extensive experience from their time with the Pakistan National Cricket Team, aiming to contribute significantly to the women’s team’s success in upcoming tournaments.

The decision to change the coaching staff follows dissatisfaction with the women’s team’s recent performance, notably a disappointing series loss against England. Wasim’s initial challenge will be preparing the team for the Asia Cup 2024, set to commence on July 19 in Dambulla, Sri Lanka. Pakistan is grouped with India, promising competitive matches between the two arch-rivals.

The Asia Cup 2024 features eight teams, including host Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Malaysia, and Thailand, alongside Pakistan and India. This tournament serves as vital preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup, offering the Pakistan Women’s Team an opportunity to reclaim form and silence critics by clinching the championship.

In preparation for the upcoming Asia Cup, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has initiated a four-day conditioning camp in Karachi for the women’s team. This initiative aims to ensure the team is physically and mentally ready for the challenges ahead.

Following the camp’s conclusion, the final squad for the Asia Cup is expected to be announced. The PCB’s decision to appoint new management and organize the conditioning camp underscores their commitment to enhancing the team’s performance on the international stage.

Under the leadership of Mohammad Wasim, supported by Junaid Khan and Abdur Rehman, the coaching staff is determined to elevate the team’s achievements, aiming for success in both the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup 2024. The effectiveness of these new measures will be closely watched as they embark on their first assignment together.
