Rohit Sharma’s career has been a tapestry of remarkable achievements. From dazzling performances on global stages to numerous double centuries and multiple IPL triumphs, culminating in captaining his team to a World Cup victory, his journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Reflecting on his latest milestone, leading India to clinch the 2024 T20 World Cup as captain, Rohit Sharma expressed unequivocally that this victory stands as the pinnacle of his career thus far. In a tense final match against South Africa, where the Proteas required 30 runs off 30 balls with 6 wickets in hand, Rohit demonstrated unwavering poise and leadership. His team emerged victorious by a narrow 7-run margin, securing his second T20 World Cup title and his first as captain.
Having experienced the highs and lows throughout his career, Rohit Sharma affirmed without hesitation that lifting the 2024 T20 World Cup trophy was indeed the greatest moment of his illustrious journey in cricket.
“This has to be the greatest time. I can say that. It’s only because how desperately I wanted to win this. So, all the runs, all the runs that I’ve scored in all these years, I think it does matter, but I’m not big on stats and all of that. I think winning games for India, winning trophies for India, that is what I look forward to all the time,” stated an exhilarated Rohit Sharma.
‘Honestly, I don’t know if it’s the greatest or what but it is definitely one of the greatest, I can say that – and when I have to look back at certain moments in the game as well, they were really playing well.”
Rohit Sharma, who partnered with Virat Kohli at the top of the order throughout the T20 World Cup, revealed his decision to retire from T20 cricket, following in the footsteps of Kohli after their victorious campaign.
However, their final triumph was hard-fought, as South Africa, led by Heinrich Klaasen, posed a serious challenge.
Yet, an exceptional bowling display in the closing overs by Pandya, Bumrah, and Arshdeep ensured victory, and India emerged as champions.
“The message was to everyone that let everything out, put whatever you have in your body, mind, put it in front of us and let’s see then what happens,” quoted Rohit when asked about holding his nerve in the final stages of the thrilling game.
“I thought the belief that everyone had till the last ball was bowled was to keep fighting. We wanted to fight, we wanted to fight and then eventually we managed to cross the line.”
