The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has blocked Azam Khan and Saim Ayub from participating in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), according to recent reports in Pakistan media. Both players, who featured in the T20 World Cup 2024 squad, will not receive No Objection Certificates (NOCs) due to PCB’s policy. This policy restricts centrally and domestically contracted players from competing in more than two foreign leagues annually.
The decision is part of PCB’s efforts to manage player workload and prioritize national commitments. The board reserves the right to refuse NOC requests based on factors such as player fitness, workload management, or domestic team responsibilities.
The denial of NOCs comes despite both Azam Khan and Saim Ayub being retained by their CPL franchises. This decision is a significant setback for the franchises, as both players have performed well with the bat in previous CPL seasons.
A source close to the PCB discussed the situation, highlighting the board’s authority to decline NOCs for any player, whether centrally contracted or domestically contracted.
“The other players have also been given a clear message that the two NOCs rule applies to both centrally and domestically contracted players and the board also reserves the right to turn down any NOC request from any player. The PCB retains the right to refuse an NOC if it believes a player’s workload and fitness may be compromised or if the player is needed for domestic duties.”
The issue regarding No Objection Certificates (NOCs) gained attention recently when Usama Mir was refused permission to participate in an overseas league. Mir argued that he had no international commitments or domestic obligations, making a case for his eligibility to play. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) responded firmly, asserting their authority over the matter, stating that the decision to grant NOCs rests solely with them.
Azam Khan and Saim Ayub struggled to make an impact with the bat during the T20 World Cup 2024. Despite being given opportunities in various matches, both players failed to capitalize, resulting in low scores.
Pakistan had a disappointing campaign overall in the T20 World Cup 2024, led by Babar Azam, which culminated in an early exit during the group stage. Defeats against the United States of America and India contributed to their elimination from the tournament.
