Virat Kohli expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his words of appreciation following India’s historic victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean. India clinched the title by defeating South Africa by 7 runs, ending an 11-year drought of ICC titles. Kohli, despite a challenging tournament, played a crucial innings in the final and was named Player of the Match. Surprising his fans, he announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game after achieving the title.
PM Modi congratulated the entire team for their resounding victory and personally spoke to Kohli, captain Rohit Sharma, and head coach Rahul Dravid over the phone, commending their significant contributions to Indian T20I cricket. On a microblogging platform, PM Modi praised Kohli for his role in bringing glory to the nation and remarked that the shortest format of cricket would miss his presence.
“Dear @imVkohli, Glad to have spoken to you. Like the innings in the Finals, you have anchored Indian batting splendidly. You’ve shone in all forms of the game. T20 Cricket will miss you but I am confident you’ll continue to motivate the new generation of players,” PM Modi’s post read.
Kohli replied on Monday, expressing his gratitude to the Indian Prime Minister for his supportive message.
“Dear @narendramodi sir, thank you so much for your very kind words and your support and encouragement always. It has been a privilege to be a part of this team which has brought the cup home. We are deeply touched & overwhelmed with the happiness it has brought the entire nation,” Kohli replied.
PM Modi extended congratulations to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership and acknowledged his achievements in T20 cricket. Rohit Sharma announced his retirement during the post-match press conference in Barbados.
The Prime Minister also commended all-rounder Hardik Pandya for his performance in the final over and praised Suryakumar Yadav for his remarkable catch on the boundary to dismiss David Miller. PM Modi expressed gratitude to departing coach Rahul Dravid for his valuable contributions to Indian cricket.
