After a two-day delay in Bridgetown, Barbados following their T20 World Cup victory, the Indian cricket team has departed the island. They are en route to New Delhi, where they plan to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi upon arrival.
According to DD News on X microblogging site, Rohit Sharma and his team are scheduled to land in the national capital Thursday morning, traveling aboard Air India’s special chartered flight AIC 24.
“Indian team is tentatively expected to reach Delhi by early morning on Thursday! They’re arriving on Air India special chartered flight AIC 24 World Champion. #IndianTeam,” the DD News Post read.
Earlier on Wednesday morning, the BCCI shared a brief video on Instagram announcing that the World Cup trophy was on its way home, signaling the Indian team’s departure from hurricane-affected Barbados.
According to a report from News18 CricketNext on Monday, the entire group including players, their families, support staff, and BCCI officials had been stranded at their beachfront accommodations in Barbados, where hotel services were also disrupted.
Due to hurricane warnings in the region, residents and tourists were advised to stay indoors. The team’s travel plans were initially postponed from Sunday, the reserve day of the 2024 T20 World Cup final, and further delayed from Monday due to the adverse weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the BCCI had been actively exploring options for arranging a charter flight directly from Barbados to New Delhi for the team. However, the closure of the airport posed significant challenges. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah was on-site, coordinating arrangements and supporting the team at their hotel during this period.
