During the historic ICC T20 World Cup 2024 triumph led by Rohit Sharma, young Indian batter Abhishek Sharma shared his inspiring experience. Witnessing India’s long-awaited victory on June 29th in Barbados deeply motivated him to strive for another ICC title for India.
Ending an 11-year drought, the India National Cricket Team clinched the title with a thrilling 7-run win over South Africa in the final. Their undefeated journey throughout the tournament marked a significant achievement, making them the first team to accomplish this feat in T20 World Cup history.
While the final posed challenges, bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya turned the game around with stellar performances. Their efforts secured India’s second-ever T20 World Cup title against all odds.
As the senior team battled in Barbados, the younger Indian squad, under Shubman Gill’s leadership, was preparing for their Zimbabwe tour. Despite their upcoming commitments, they remained glued to the match, witnessing history being made.
Abhishek Sharma, now part of the Indian team for the Zimbabwe tour, recalled watching the final alongside Yuvraj Singh, who was visibly moved by the emotional victory. Reflecting on the unforgettable moment in a BCCI video, Abhishek expressed how it has fueled his determination to contribute to India’s future successes.
“I was watching the match with one and only Yuvi Paji. When India won against them, he got very emotional. I got a lot of inspiration from that. And I also liked it a lot. Because it’s everyone’s dream to win the ICC trophy.
“And they have won a lot for India. And to see them emotional. It was like a moment that I will never forget. We celebrated it as well. So I think this World Cup was very special. And I got so much motivation that I wanted to win the World Cup for India.”
A great ending for obviously three legends of T20 cricket – Ruturaj Gaikwad
After India’s triumphant victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, three stalwarts of the game—captains Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja—chose to retire from T20I cricket, concluding their careers on a remarkable high that resonated profoundly following India’s championship win.
Reflecting on India’s T20 World Cup triumph, Ruturaj Gaikwad emphasized the significance of the moment, highlighting its special nature. He also took a moment to acknowledge the contributions of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, recognizing their pivotal roles in India’s success.
“To have this kind of a win where almost we were in the jaws of defeat, and then to come back and win from there is a special moment. And a great ending for obviously three legends of T20 cricket.”
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma are eager to make their mark for the Indian team and uphold the legacy left by the senior players. The inaugural T20I between India and Zimbabwe is scheduled for July 6th.
