Team India received a triumphant welcome in the country on Thursday (July 4) upon their return from their victorious campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
The celebrations kicked off as soon as the Indian team arrived at the IGI airport in New Delhi, despite the early morning arrival. Fans thronged the airport and later gathered outside their hotel in large numbers, enthusiastically cheering the team.
In New Delhi, the team had a special meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence before heading to Mumbai for a grand victory parade. The parade commenced at Marine Drive and culminated at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The streets were packed with thousands of fans eagerly waiting to celebrate with the players after their World Cup triumph.
During the parade, the players rode in an open-top bus, soaking in the lively atmosphere. At Wankhede Stadium, Rohit Sharma and his teammates took a victory lap, engaging with the crowd and enjoying the celebrations with singing and dancing. The BCCI organized a felicitation ceremony where the players were honored and awarded the Rs 125 crore prize money.
On Friday (July 5), the BCCI shared a video capturing Rohit Sharma placing the T20 World Cup trophy at the BCCI headquarters. Accompanying him were BCCI president Roger Binny and secretary Jay Shah, marking a special moment in the team’s triumphant journey.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has decided to hang up his boots from T20Is following India’s World Cup triumph. Joining him in retirement from the shortest format are Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja. Rohit’s journey in T20I cricket began in 2007, and he was a pivotal member of India’s historic victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup that year.
He leaves the T20I arena as India’s highest-ever run-getter, a testament to his consistency and prowess. Rohit also holds the distinction of being the only Indian cricketer to lift the T20 World Cup trophy twice. His leadership was instrumental in guiding India to glory in the T20 World Cup 2024, where he emerged as the team’s top scorer with 257 runs, including three crucial half-centuries.
