Team India will soon appoint a new permanent captain for T20Is following Rohit Sharma’s conclusion as captain after leading India to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is after securing India’s second T20 World Cup title, their first since 2007. For the current series against Zimbabwe, Shubman Gill has been entrusted with leading the team, as most regular players are occupied with post-World Cup commitments.
Given the youthful composition of the Zimbabwe tour squad, the selectors opted to give Gill the captaincy. The candidates being considered to succeed Rohit Sharma include Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav.
Pandya was the primary choice and served as vice-captain during the T20 World Cup, playing a pivotal role in India’s successful campaign with strong performances both with bat and ball. Suryakumar Yadav, meanwhile, also captained the side on occasions when Pandya was unavailable due to injury last year.
Team India’s new T20I captain:
According to a Times Now report, Hardik Pandya is poised to take over as India’s new T20I captain and is expected to lead the team on the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. The report also suggests a change in ODI leadership, with KL Rahul likely to captain in Rohit’s absence, hinting at Rahul’s potential as the next permanent ODI captain as per selectors’ considerations.
“Hardik Pandya is all set to lead the Indian team in the T20 format after Rohit Sharma’s retirement. He’s unlikely to be rested for the upcoming series vs Sri Lanka. In ODIs, KL Rahul will lead the Indian team in the absence of Rohit Sharma as BCCI believes he makes his runs in the longer format,” top sources within the BCCI told the news outlet.
Meanwhile, the BCCI revealed Gautam Gambhir as Team India’s newly appointed head coach on Tuesday, July 9. The former India opener’s inaugural task in this role will be overseeing the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka commencing later this month.
