Following his appointment as India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir is scheduled to hold his inaugural meeting with the selection committee before the upcoming Sri Lanka tour later this week. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli likely to be rested from the 3-match ODI series due to an intense Test schedule following their retirement from the shortest format, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul are expected to assume leadership roles in T20Is and ODIs respectively.
According to reports from Sports Tak, Pandya is anticipated to captain the T20I squad while KL Rahul is set to lead in ODIs. Should Pandya opt out of the series, Suryakumar Yadav is poised to take over the captaincy.
“It is expected that in the absence of Rohit, Hardik and KL are the options to be given the responsibility of captain. Both have captained the team earlier,” the report quoted a source as saying
“If Hardik is not available for the T20Is, you might see Suryakumar Yadav as captain in T20Is and Rahul in ODIs. But for now, it seems that Hardik and KL will lead the team,” the source added.
Earlier on Tuesday, the BCCI appointed Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of Team India, emphasizing their confidence in his ability to bring tenacity and strong leadership to the role.
The board acknowledged Rahul Dravid’s recent success and expressed hope that Gambhir, known for his pivotal contributions to India’s victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, would inspire the team to achieve new milestones under his guidance, as stated by BCCI secretary Jay Shah.
