Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ended their decade-long quest for the Indian Premier League trophy this season, clinching the coveted title after a prolonged interval of ten years.
Since their last triumph in 2014 under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, KKR had endured a drought in the IPL. The decision to bring back Gautam Gambhir as a mentor proved to be decisive, as in his inaugural season in this role, the former captain steered the team to their long-awaited third championship.
Traditionally, KKR had celebrated their IPL victories with grand events at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, supported by the enthusiastic fans and facilitated by the West Bengal government. However, following their latest triumph, KKR opted not to organize an immediate celebratory event. This decision was likely influenced by the imminent start of the T20 World Cup, allowing the team to focus on preparations rather than festivities.
While initial reports suggested a celebration would be held at Eden Gardens on July 23, recent updates from RevSportz’s Subhayan Chakraborty indicate that no such event is planned for later this month in Kolkata.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ run in IPL 2024:
KKR’s journey in IPL 2024 was nothing short of remarkable. Despite a brief mid-tournament slump where their bowlers faced challenges defending formidable totals at home, Kolkata Knight Riders maintained dominance throughout the season.
They kicked off with three consecutive victories and capped it with a stunning streak of six wins to finish the league stage at the summit of the points table for the first time in their history. Ending with a commanding 20 points and a record net run rate of 1.428 underscored their superiority.
Looking ahead, the three-time champions are poised for a new chapter next season, navigating without Gambhir at the helm. The former Indian opener’s recent appointment as head coach of the national team marks a significant transition for KKR.
