Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, clinched the T20 World Cup last month, marking India’s end to a long wait for an ICC title. This victory secured India’s second T20 World Cup title, a triumph achieved after a gap of 17 years.
Having participated in every edition of the T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma made history by becoming the first player to win the title both as a player and as a captain. While he led the team admirably to the semi-finals in the 2022 T20 World Cup, they narrowly lost to England.
Prior to this triumph, Rohit Sharma faced setbacks in major ICC tournaments, including the WTC 2023 final and the ODI World Cup final. However, his perseverance paid off when he finally led India to glory in the T20 World Cup as captain.
During an insightful session on The Aldar Experts podcast, Rohit Sharma generously shared valuable leadership insights that have been instrumental in shaping his successful tenure as captain of the Indian cricket team.
“For a leader, I think it’s important for him to try and lead from the front, set an example for the rest of your colleagues and teammates. And for me, it’s always been important that I have always carried myself in a way where I try and set an example for my colleagues. It is not just about what you do on the field, it is also about what you do off the field as well,” said Rohit on captaincy and leadership.
Furthermore, Rohit Sharma emphasized the importance of fostering a familial atmosphere within the team. Several young players, such as Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, have frequently praised Rohit’s supportive and nurturing approach. They have highlighted how he treats everyone with equality and assumes the role of an elder brother within the team, a sentiment that resonates strongly whenever they speak about him.
“And I treat them like family, like brothers you know because as much as you are part of this team, they share equal responsibility and equal share in the team, to be part of that team. So you have got to make them feel homely, you have got to make them feel that you are wanted here,” Rohit Sharma added further.
Following India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign, Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, announced their retirement from T20I cricket. Despite this milestone, Rohit remains driven by unfulfilled ambitions as captain, setting his sights on securing an ODI World Cup and a World Test Championship title for India. Currently leading the WTC points table, Team India has reached the pinnacle twice before—in 2021 and 2023—yet endured defeats in both final encounters, leaving Rohit determined to rewrite their fortunes in these prestigious formats.
Wanted This Badly: Rohit Sharma After T20 World Cup Glory
Following his triumph in the T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma was visibly moved, expressing his deep-seated desire to secure this prestigious title for India. His emotions reflected the immense significance and personal meaning attached to this achievement.
“I wanted this badly. It’s very hard to put it in words because that moment,” Rohit said in an emotional tone after India’s T20 World Cup win.
Presently, Rohit Sharma is taking a break from cricket and was recently spotted attending Wimbledon. Speculation suggests that both he and Virat Kohli might be rested during the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
