The Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises remain in anticipation of their revenue share, despite the overall success of the latest tournament edition. They have recently reminded the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) about the pending payments.
The ticket sales for the 2024 PSL season were adversely affected by several factors including low attendance in Karachi, rain disruptions in Rawalpindi, and notably sparse crowds during the playoffs and finals at the National Stadium. These conditions contributed to a reported 17% decline in ticket revenue, amounting to approximately PKR 100 million in lost income due to reduced match attendance.
Although the PCB anticipates an overall revenue exceeding PKR 7 billion from this year’s T20 tournament, each franchise is expected to receive over PKR 98 crore. However, operational costs such as player salaries, travel, and accommodations are substantial, ranging between 55 to 60 million rupees per team. With player salaries surging to 37 million rupees each, driven by the strengthening dollar rate, many franchises are likely to face financial challenges despite the revenue generated from the ninth season of the PSL.
PSL franchises await their revenue share.
Sports journalist Saleem Khaliq reported that PSL franchises are yet to receive their revenue share and have formally reminded the PCB. He added that the franchises are keen to receive updates on the schedule for the 10th edition of the PSL.
“PSL franchises are awaiting their share of the revenue; they have sent a reminder letter to the PCB. The board itself is to receive over 3 billion rupees from various stakeholders. One owes 1256622048 rupees. The franchises are also keen to know the dates for the 10th edition,” Saleem Khaliq wrote.
PSL 2025 Dates To Clash With IPL 2025
The Champions Trophy, slated for February-March 2025 in Pakistan, is likely to prompt a rescheduling of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Consequently, the PSL, traditionally held in February, will take place in April-May 2025, overlapping with the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, the world’s richest cricket league.
Cricketers such as Sikander Raza, Rovman Powell, and David Willey participated in both the PSL and IPL in 2024, following in the footsteps of past players like Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Rashid Khan. If the IPL and PSL schedules coincide in 2025, players may favor the more lucrative IPL.
Both leagues typically start their matches around the same time. The IPL boasts a significantly larger global fanbase and record-high viewership, while the PSL faces lower viewership numbers. This could lead to a further decline in PSL viewership and challenges akin to those seen by defunct leagues.
