Following his appointment as India’s T20I captain for the Sri Lanka tour, Suryakumar Yadav expressed gratitude to fans and supporters for their overwhelming love and backing. The dynamic Indian batsman shared on social media that the captaincy role fills him with responsibility, excitement, and eagerness for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
The selectors chose Suryakumar Yadav, renowned as one of the world’s top T20 batters, over Hardik Pandya, who has previously led the team and served as vice-captain during the T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit Sharma will lead the ODI squad, with Shubman Gill appointed as vice-captain for both formats.
“Thank you so much for outpouring love, support, and best wishes from you. Last few weeks have been nothing short of a dream and I am truly grateful. Playing for the country is the most special feeling that I will never be able to describe in words,” said Surya in his post on Instagram.
“This new role brings with it, a lot of responsibility, excitement and enthusiasm. I hope to keep receiving your support and blessings.
“All fame reaches God, God is great,” he added.
Amid expectations that Hardik Pandya would assume the T20I captaincy post Rohit Sharma’s retirement, Gautam Gambhir has expressed confidence in Suryakumar Yadav (SKY). Yadav, who led India in seven matches in 2023 during Pandya’s absence, earned praise from Gambhir, who had previously highlighted SKY’s leadership qualities during their time together at Kolkata Knight Riders. Gambhir’s influence appears evident in Yadav’s elevation to captaincy.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has been appointed India’s vice-captain. Despite speculation that other players might take precedence, Gill’s recent stint as captain in the Zimbabwe T20Is showcased his leadership potential. The management’s decision underscores their belief in Gill’s abilities, placing the young cricketer firmly in the leadership fold.
