Abhishek Sharma, the emerging Indian opener, recently discussed his deep bond with Shubman Gill, India’s vice-captain in white-ball cricket, who has been rapidly ascending in the Indian cricket scene.
The duo notably shared the field during India’s recent tour of Zimbabwe. Reflecting on their enduring friendship, Abhishek Sharma highlighted that their connection remains unwavering, despite Shubman Gill’s skyrocketing career, especially as captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT).
Abhishek Sharma opens up about his friendship with Shubman Gill.
Since their days together in the under-12 circuit, Sharma and Gill have shared a remarkable camaraderie, having been roommates and integral members of a tight-knit group during their early years. The 23-year-old batter revealed that despite Gill’s demanding schedule with the Indian cricket team, their conversations often hark back to cherished childhood memories.
Acknowledging Gill’s increased commitments, particularly with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and the national team, Sharma noted that their communication has become less frequent. However, he emphasized that the essence of their friendship remains unchanged.
Sharma expressed his belief that their bond will endure the test of time and the pressures of their careers. Whether they’re on the field or off, he is confident that their connection will continue to be strong.
Abhishek Sharma told Manjot Kalra, “Our bond is still the same. However, he is very busy now, but whenever we meet, we talk about our childhood. As you know, we used to be roommates. We used to be a group. These things are still the same. I don’t think he has changed a bit. He is still the same. He is always open-minded. He is always close to me. We still talk a lot. Obviously, he is playing for the Indian team.
Whenever we play together, I feel like the bond will remain the same. I don’t think it will ever change. Some things changed a little bit, and I know he is busy. Our matches are also going on. Even if we don’t talk to each other, even if we do talk, I don’t think there will be any difference. Like we used to do before, it will remain the same.”

Shubman Gill named India’s vice-captain; Abhishek Sharma omitted from Sri Lanka tour squad.
Shubman Gill recently ascended to the role of vice-captain for Team India in ODI and T20I cricket, while Suryakumar Yadav took over as T20I captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format after India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 victory.
In contrast, Abhishek Sharma, despite impressing with a T20I century on debut during India’s recent series in Zimbabwe, was notably omitted from the squad for the upcoming white-ball series in Sri Lanka.
Former cricketers like Harbhajan Singh and Wasim Jaffer have expressed surprise and criticism over Sharma’s exclusion, questioning the decision of the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee.
The Indian team has already arrived in Colombo for the six-match white-ball series against Sri Lanka, commencing with the first T20I on July 27. This series marks Gautam Gambhir’s debut as head coach and Suryakumar Yadav’s first series as full-time T20I captain.
