MS Dhoni, the former captain of both the India National Cricket Team and Chennai Super Kings, has recently shared insights about his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni mentioned that he will decide on his future only after the rules and regulations for the 2025 IPL season are unveiled.
Speculation about Dhoni’s retirement has been a hot topic concerning the IPL 2025 season. While he has yet to make a formal announcement, there is widespread belief that he might have already played his final season with the Chennai Super Kings.
Prior to the IPL 2024 season, Dhoni handed over the captaincy of the Chennai Super Kings to the promising Ruturaj Gaikwad, which led many to believe that 2024 would mark his swan song in the league. After the 2023 season, Dhoni had indicated that he would continue for one more season as a tribute to his fans.
Despite stepping down as captain, Dhoni remained a guiding force for the team. Even though Chennai Super Kings finished 5th on the points table, Dhoni continued to offer his strategic advice to Gaikwad and assist with field placements during matches.
Dhoni’s impact on the game, particularly in the IPL, is legendary. His leadership has played a crucial role in making the Chennai Super Kings the most successful team in the league’s history, with five titles under his captaincy.
Dhoni’s massive fan following is so fervent that he often receives cheers from rival fans, who chant “Dhoni Dhoni” even when he’s playing against their team. His unparalleled presence in the league has led many to hope for one more season with him in the IPL.
We will have to make a decision which is best for CSK – MS Dhoni
At a recent event, MS Dhoni was queried about his potential involvement with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2025 season. In response, the wicketkeeper-batter indicated that his decision would hinge on the retention regulations set for that season. Dhoni mentioned that he would make his choice after reviewing the new rules, aiming to determine what would be in the best interest of the team.
“There’s a lot of time left for the franchises and management to decide on the retention rules and everything. So when all of it is decided, then we will take a decision. So no we don’t have the ball in our court.
“When the regulations are decided, then we will be able to take a call…At the end of the day, we will have to make a decision which is best for CSK, and that is the ultimate goal.”
On Wednesday, July 30th, the owners of Indian Premier League franchises held a meeting with officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to deliberate on retention policies and the Right to Match (RTM) rules. The governing body is expected to finalize its decisions following these discussions, with an official announcement forthcoming.
